About the North Eastern region

The North Eastern river basin district drapes the north east corner of the island of Ireland, stretching from the coast of County Down at its southern end, past the city of Belfast, across the glens of Antrim and touches County Derry / Londonderry at it north west boundary. The Lagan is its major river, running as it does into the port of Belfast and its former shipbuilding yards while the tidal races at the mouth of Strangford Lough are also a feature. Many smaller rivers flow from the hills and glens of the area to the coast, including rivers like the Bush, which supported millraces and associated industry like the whiskey distillery at Bushmills.

The North Eastern River Basin District

The North Eastern River Basin District (RBD) is one of three RBDs that together form the North South Shared Aquatic Resource (NS Share) Project. This project is supported by the EU INTERREG IIIA Programme for Ireland/Northern Ireland. It was set up to implement the objectives of the Water Framework Directive in the region. This Directive is the most substantial and innovative piece of European Union water legislation to date. It sets out a detailed framework for the protection, improvement and sustainable use of our waters.
